My friends over at Brooklyn Underground Films have just released their latest short "We Will Live Again" on Vimeo and it was selected to be Short Of The Week!

The film follows a small group of people who cryogenically freeze bodies after death in hope that they will be revived sometime in the future.

The subject is totally fascinating, (and a bit baffling?) and of course beautifully shot. Watch the whole thing here!

Congrats you guys!

Home again, home again...

Phew! We're back from an epic whirlwind trip:

  • Wednesday night: Fly to San Jose, CA. Visit family in Berkeley and San Francisco.
  • Friday morning: Train to Sacramento, then drive to Nevada City for a couple We Are Wizards screenings at the Nevada City Film Festival.
  • Saturday night: Catch a --delayed, boo-- red-eye to New York.
  • Sunday morning: Get in just in time to sneak in a visit to Josh and Trisha's fabulous new apartment and then off to Mandy and Henry's bowling-wedding-party-extravaganza at Brooklyn Bowl.  (See picture above.)
  • Sunday evening: catch Metro North to Connecticut for mexican food with G's brother.
  • Monday morning: train to Providence, RI and then a taxi to...home!

If only we had taken a ferry as well... Or a hot air balloon. Clearly, we were trying to see how many different modes of transportation we could utilize in five days.

Thanks for a wonderful time everybody!

We Are Wizards News

With the latest Harry Potter movie out, it seems appropriate to plug the documentary I worked on, We Are Wizards.  If you didn't get to see We Are Wizards in the theater, you now have several viewing options available! Hooray!

•We would LOVE it if you just bought the DVD from us right here.

YOU will love it because it has awesome extras-- deleted scenes, commentary from various bands, more awesome Brad Neely etc, etc.  Buying the dvd is the way to go.

But you can also:

•Buy or rent from iTunes

•Buy or rent from Amazon

• Rent it from Netflix.

And FYI, a much shorter, more family friendly ( aka no swearing) version will be available on public television at some point.

The latest very exciting news is that MSNBC's the Rachel Maddow Show used clips of We Are Wizards the other day:

If you have no idea what the heck I'm talking about, We Are Wizards is a documentary that explores slices of the world of Harry Potter fan culture. Read all about it here.

Busy Bees

Yikes its been a little crazy around here.  ...Which is nothing new, apparently.  Let's do some catching up:

The We Are Wizards Theatrical Release was so much fun!  It played at Cinema Village in New York, so we got to take a trip "home" and see everybody.

First we went to a Reading/Book Signing at Barnes & Noble for Melissa's Harry, a History  (--which is on the New York Times Bestseller's List!!)  She had us come up afterwards and answer questions about the film.  She even led a group over to one of the screenings, which was pretty sweet of her.  We raced back for the first Q and A, then got to have drinks with friends and family.  (That part of the evening could have used more planning-- we ended up in a pretty dive-y bar in the east village with both our moms. Ah well.  They didn't seem to mind.) Then raced back for the second Q and A.  And then out again for more fun.  Then sleep.  Finally.

Anyhow, WAW played all week, ( and got a New York Times review!) and now the DVD's are available for Pre-Order!  Yay!

We spent the rest of the week at home catching up on work and planning for our Thanksgiving dinner.  Plates, check.  Turkey, check.  platters to put food on... uh...

We spent last weekend with old friends. Mostly cooking and eating. The best way to spend a weekend.

And now we're back, trying to get it all together for Thanksgiving for real.  Hang up art, rearrange furniture, do some cooking ahead of time, pick up the turkey (from the Turkey Farm!) tonight, clean up, make our apartment pretty!  yada yada.

In the midst of all this, the Mister and Saulie, aka The Possessed One, got to have some quiet time together:

They actually sat like this for a good 45 minutes before she tried to bite anyone.

We're getting there.

Boston Science Museum!

I mentioned a few posts ago that I was in Boston last weekend with our film We Are Wizards at the Independent Film Festival of Boston.  We were there for four days and had so much fun.  Not only did the screenings go really well:

But we had fun traipsing around Boston as well, which was a bit surprising as I don't remember liking Boston all that much.  ( No offense Beantown-ers.)  I went shopping with my mom, got various kinds delicious sushi with my cousins, went bowling and had yummy brunches, but if I had to choose, the tourist highlight was visiting the home of  many happy childhood memories: The Museum of Science, Boston.

I remember going a lot when I was little. It was always a treat to take the train from Providence, or even brave the hour drive, and then be released into this awesome space where we would go tearing about.   (The Boston Children's Museum was a close second favorite.) Admittedly, its definitely seen better days and is not as impressive as I remember, probably do to my current height, (everything seemed a lot smaller,) as well as a lack of funding.

But still!:  The omni theater! The stairs that play music when you walk on them! The space shuttle you can go in!

The Sequoia Tree I fainted in front of on a 7th grade ( 8th grade?) field trip!

The electric/lightening show!-- well we unfortunately missed that, but we did get to play with this:

Plus there was a show on squamates — "the order of legged and legless lizards." ahem.  That includes snakes by the way.  It was alternately a bit sad, ( those glass terrariums always seem really small, especially accompanied by a placard saying something about how these specifics lizards love to "travel great distances in a day," ) and then just so cool I mostly forgot about being sad.  Sorry little guys.

I tried to take photos that captured the cool patterns and texture of their skin.  It mostly didn't work.  But a few of them did.

Aren't they pretty? And look at this cool little guy!

My Goodness!

Apparently my subject submission of "Wrinkles" to Illustration Friday was chosen this week!  Thanks IF! And a special thanks to Velvet for letting me know.  I've been at the Independent Film Festival of Boston with We Are Wizards since Thursday.  We got back kind of late last night and between the lack of sleep for the past four days, and with catching up with everything else, I really wouldn't have known if it wasn't for that note.  Guess I better do this week's IF, huh?

Austin, Tx: food

So a big part of our trip to Austin was eating.  Are you surprised?  There wasn't a lot of variety: we basically stuck to BBQ or Mexican the whole time.  But it was good.   Here's a little taste. BBQ at Stubbs:

greg at stubbs
Twice.  We took Sam there later.
sam at Stubbs Gerald at Stubbs

Gueros Taco Bar was really yummy.

Plus they had these pretty trees outside, that turned from this:

We're going to Austin!

SXSW

It was officially announced the other day that We Are Wizards, the documentary I've been working on with Josh, Myles and Gerald, has been invited to have it’s World Premiere in the South By South West Documentary Competition this year.  Its a huge deal for us and we're all so excited.  Now we're all running around getting ready.  I don't know if a few years ago when Gerald and Josh started this thing they ever thought we'd actually get here.  But it looks like its happening.
I can't wait for March...And of course, if you're going to be in the Austin area in the beginning of March, please stop by and say hello.   Also check out HeatherShow,  the website of Heather.  She is featured in WAW and is not only a wonderful person, but also recently posted a sweet and perfectly dead-on description of the film.  Thank you Heather.
